Administration officials disclosed the start of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on prior threats in response to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to stretch into its third consecutive week.

The director of the White House budget office posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official process for terminating staff.

Although the official provided no details on which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Also, a union for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services used by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the actions in the legal system.
