Sandy Baltimore Spot-Kick Saves Chelsea Following Twente Nearly Cause Champions League Shock

The Champions League continues to be Chelsea's elusive prize. They desire it deeply. However, their credentials took a hit in the Netherlands, a 1-1 draw against Twente not at all the ideal start to a tournament they hope to dominate.

In spite of their control in possession, it was who took the lead, through captain Danique van Ginkel, prior to Sandy Baltimore converted from the spot to level the scores.

Domestic Dominance But European Heartbreak

Every trophy holds value, but for the squad that has consistently won it all, the yearning for the final piece is powerful. It escaped them under Emma Hayes’ tenure, loss against Barcelona in the 2020-21 final the nearest they came. Three straight semi-final defeats against the Catalan side, including an 8-2 aggregate loss last season, have stung each time.

Team Changes Takes Its Toll

The coach flexed the team's strength ahead of the visit to Enschede, with only four starters from the last game in the lineup, but it proved costly as they started their European journey under a new format – the group stage replaced by league phase similar to the men's tournament.

The two sides met during the previous group stage, with the Blues inflicting a heavy overall loss on the Dutch champions. Van Ginkel stated they'd look a bit changed one year on. “I hope we've matured somewhat and can address what we did wrong,” she said.

Home Side's Growth On Display

At their stadium that maturity was evident, Twente didn't attempt to match Chelsea's press or battle one-on-one, they proved an efficient unit, frustrating the visitors who sent wave after wave toward the goal.

Twente's players celebrate their captain after her first strike.

Yet, the hosts created the best opportunity in the first period. Leonie Vliek found space following a smart exchange with Jill Roord, but instead of aiming for goal she passed for the team's top scorer who was denied by the defense.

Chelsea showed spirit yet missing cohesion, the rotations taking a toll, especially in attack. Maika Hamano ought to have scored from a cutback but blasted high from the spot in a key moment, while the keeper made key saves.

Second Half Drama

After halftime, a recent addition found the net, turning in a low cross, yet the assistant was raised, the provider deemed in an illegal position.

The manager turned to the substitutes in an attempt to alter the dynamics soon after. Two starters made way, including one with a head injury, for new energy and a former Twente player.

Wasted Opportunities

Twente had a clear opportunity to take the lead right around the hour mark. Having won possession in attack, a low cross reached a teammate in the box but a tackle prevented the goal.

The hosts' chances were limited and with every passed without scoring, it felt that Twente might pay the price. Yet, it was the Blues ruing their wastefulness. A pass back found Van Ginkel who moved to her strong foot and struck into the net.

Leveling Penalty

The Blues continued pressing. They haven't produced thrilling performances this term yet they've earned points and in the Netherlands they extended that trend. A challenge on a player gave the visitors a spot-kick, though they could have had one earlier when a late boot hit a teammate. Baltimore scored to make it even.

A winner eluded them, but they have opportunities to bounce back against upcoming opponents ahead of meeting familiar foes and title winners.
