No less than 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio's Largest Law Enforcement Operation on Gangs
At least 64 people lost their lives in a law enforcement action against the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the largest and deadliest raid in the region's records.
Four security agents were included in the fatalities during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials reported. Over 80 people were detained.
Violent conflicts erupted when about 2,500 security personnel initiated the operation on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization countered with shooting, setting fire to barriers and dropping bombs from drones, officials stated.
The UN Human Rights Office stated it felt "horrified" by the security action, calling for "prompt and effective investigations".
Raid Aftermath
The informal settlements adjacent to the aerial transportation hub is regarded as the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.
State officials confirmed at least 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Dozens of people were hurt, including non-combatants affected by the violence.
Resident Accounts
Residents have described the hillside area - housing around 300,000 people - to a "combat area" since the raid started.
Access ways continue shut throughout the region.
Gang Growth
The Comando Vermelho organization has been growing their control throughout the region, growing illegal substance trade paths and dominance over the slum communities.
Local law enforcement stated in excess of 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were captured in the mission, along with multiple guns.
Raid Preparation
The joint operation by different law enforcement agencies comes after a twelve-month inquiry.
Many of the individuals are believed to be affiliates of a group from the Brazilian state who are presently concealed in the city.
