The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves the manager's team up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at both ends of pitch

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's absence - notched his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defensive duties, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised strikers - had netted just a single goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having space and time to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.

The Toffees: Moyes' men head to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: Spurs travel to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round League Cup tie against the Magpies.
