France will start intercepting migrant vessels in Channel after UK pressure
French officials have consented to begin stopping small boats in the English Channel, after months of pressure from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift follows the British leader wrote to the French leader asking him to back the plan and saying there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their passengers, according to official confirmation.
French authorities have infrequently intervened to stop the overcrowded boats leaving the coastline because it is viewed as too great a risk to both officers and civilians.
"It is essential that we deploy these methods this period... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Now, a French naval police spokesperson says officers will start intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding lives.
Significantly, the official ruled out the use of nets to intercept boats, which had earlier been suggested as a possible method to snarl the propellers of the vessels.
This determination to take action at all is a significant step forward, following a short-lived shift towards a stricter strategy this warmer season, which ceased when the former Interior Minister departed from government.
That was highlighted in the summer month, in the run-up to a meeting between the Prime Minister and French president, when French police were witnessed wading into the sea to slash the hulls of a vessel.
Now French officials will once more be allowed to stop boats prior to they collect asylum-seeking individuals from the coastal areas of France's north coast, however it's not clear how the small boats will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are currently delaying the commencement of interceptions and the human trafficking networks will be seeking methods to adapt to avoid interception, as they have frequently done in the past.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for comment.
